Stockport Council set out to develop and test an enhanced mapping tool that would bring their Local Plan to life. They set out to develop new learning to build on their open source web mapping stack, Leaflet. They developed a consultation portal within the digital map, allowing people to more easily visually explore and comment on specific aspects of the Local Plan during consultation.
Their ambition began from resident feedback that inaccessible planning and consultation information has been a barrier to engagement. This included comments from young people that interactive engagement formats are more understandable, and comments from the Borough Plan process that visually engaging information increases levels of engagement.
The development of the consultation platform with the new interactive map enabled ongoing conversations around the Local Plan with seldom heard members of the community, whilst reinforcing strong relationships built from the council’s previous planning consultations.
