Creating a baseline for social impact

Back to Digital Planning Programme Case Studies

Harlow & Gilston Garden Town (HGGT) set out to deliver social value mapping and monitoring via digital and in-person engagement across the Garden Town. By building a clear picture of what people currently like, dislike and need and in the context of growth, an evidence-based approach could be taken to establish a Quality of Life baseline for the local area.

To do so, the project team sought to map and monitor what local people valued and needed through a public consultation, ‘Your Quality of Life’. To do so, HGGT partnered with Commonplace, Quality of Life Foundation, Rainbow Services and Stantec to make their consultation approaches more inclusive and engaging to hard to reach groups.

The project team gathered resident views via their digital platform which included a digital map co-created with local and neighbouring residents and in-person events. Outputs will be used to support master planning and stewardship arrangements and enable further monitoring of changes in quality of life and social value within the planned growth of the area.
